Pilgrim Surf + Supply

Some people may be surprised to see a surf shop in the middle of the concrete jungle of Brooklyn, but it turns out that Pilgrim Surf + Supply has found their niche in what is a surprisingly large urban surf culture. Owner Chris Gentile is a visual artist, art professor and avid surfer who opened the space in 2012 to offer the best of what’s available in the surf market, tailored to the needs New York City surfers. The shop houses an impressive inventory spread over two floors, including a wall full of hand-shaped surf boards from a variety of brands including Andreini, Fineline, Josh Hall and Mandala. In the middle of the space sits a large selection of surf and beach clothing, like shorts by Battenwear, a brand designed and manufactured in the Garment District in NYC, as well as classic and durable items from Copenhagen-based brand Norse Projects and organically dyed goods from Industry of All Nations. Coveted swimwear brands include Bantu, Basta, Giejo, and Brooklyn-based Ace & Jig. Accessories abound as well, including exclusive backpacks from Kletterworks - company from Bozeman, Montana - and sunglasses by RetroSuperfuture. Other odds and ends include hand-loomed Indian textiles by Auntie Oti, art and surf books, small leather goods, and Juniper Ridge products like trail soaps and room sprays. For the hardcore surfer who knows how to fix their own banged up boards, there are kits and products to mend dings, and downstairs where they house wetsuits and used boards (including those belonging to the employees), they even have an on-site repair service. Even if the surf culture in New York is decidedly different from, say, the California coast, the surfers are no less serious about it, and Pilgrim Surf + Supply is here to help them fuel their passion and curate their gear.Show lessRead more
