Pickle Guys

Located just off the corner of Essex and Grand, Pickle Guys is the Lower East Side's famous purveyor of briny bliss. It's a small store, but it's impossible to miss. (If you don't take notice, your nostrils definitely will.) From the saline-scented air to the bright-orange barrels to owner Alan's boisterous teasing of some of his favorite customers, a visit to Pickle Guys is likely to engage all of the senses. That includes taste, of course. Made the old-fashioned way without chemicals or preservatives, Pickle Guys' barrel-cured sour pickles have become the stuff of legend. They are available in full, three-quarter or half-sour flavors, as well as “new,” hot or mixed with horseradish. And that's just the beginning. Alan has been a pickler for over 30 years, which has given him ample time to expand his offerings to include pickled olives, peppers, kraut, tomatoes, okra, turnips, carrots, mushrooms, and an ever-changing selection of seasonal and holiday specialties (pickled-pineapples when we stopped by). There is another Pickle Guys on Coney Island but the Essex Street location is the famous original, lauded by tourists, loved by locals.Show lessRead more
