Pain d'Avignon

If you've dined in a few vaunted New York City restaurants during the last decade, there's a good chance that you've already enjoyed some of Pain d'Avignon's wares. You just might not have known it at the time. Starting in 2000, Pain d'Avignon has been supplying prestigious NYC eateries like Eleven Madison Park and Momofuku with bread from their wholesale bakery in Long Island City. Then, in February of 2010, the bakery mercifully opened a retail outlet in the LES landmark that is the Essex Street Market. Now we all have access to Pain d'Avignon's signature baguettes, croissants, pain au chocolates or other exciting creations like their cranberry pecan rolls. With two deliveries every day, the bread still comes from the Long Island City bakery, where it is made in the “traditional” way: only the finest ingredients and dough that is still kneaded and cut by hand. Claustrophobics beware: Pain d'Avignon's space is rather snug. The scent of fresh French bread, however, will make you want to get up close and personal.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
