P.S. Bookshop

High city rent prices often make independent used bookstores a rarity, but the payoff comes with the wide variety of eclectic and rare texts they can offer, said P.S. Book Shop owner Yuval Gans. “New York is a very good place for this kind of business. You never know what is going to come in each day,” said Gans, a used-book enthusiast who opened his store in 2006. With some 30,000 titles on the shelves and more turning up each day, Gans said his Dumbo store covers almost every genre, although he likes to focus on art and architecture. One of the more lively areas is the voluminous and chaotic children’s section, where weekly story-time readings and twice-weekly music lessons take place. Prices are fair—usually about half of original retail—but rare volumes may be harder to pry from Gans’ hands at any price! Be sure to check out P.S. Book Shops’ graphic novel section by the front register.Show lessRead more
