Open Air Modern

Like a good boy scout on a fishing trip, the owner of Open Air Modern, Matthew Singer, has adopted a "catch and release" policy. The only difference is that instead of fish, Singer deals with mid-century modern furniture and rare books. He says, "It's a thrill to find great pieces, but it makes me just as happy to find a good home for them." That love for what he does is apparent in his shop's well-curated selection of fine Scandinavian furniture, lighting, and design objects from the 1950s through the 1980s. Open Air Modern's pieces are both stylish and comfortable and although their prices are not as low as in a thrift shop, they are more modest than in a designer furniture store. The style and attention to detail which characterizes Open Air Modern's furniture selection is also reflected in their book selection. When you walk into his shop, Singer doesn't want you to search for something, he wants you to discover something. The focus here is on art monographs, photography, fashion, and design books that are signed, rare, and/or out of print. Basically, if you can find it in another shop, then you probably won't find it here. Our only advice before you visit Open Air Modern is that you make sure your have enough room in your apartment, because this shop's furniture and book collections fit together perfectly!Show lessRead more
