Obscura Antiques & Oddities

It’s not difficult to lose track of time at Obscura Antiques, a small but curious shop of the bizarre and unusual. Collectors Mike Zohn and Evan Michaelson have been gathering an ever-changing array of strange and interesting finds since 1991. Under the Obscura moniker they have a place to display the piles of amazing curiosities that so long ago outgrew their respective living rooms. Locating such beautiful and intriguing objects takes a considerable amount of time and effort, so while the owners are out scouting for precious rarities, their good friend Mary keeps an eye on the store, which is like a tiny museum. Whether you’re curious about Victorian-era clothing, outdated scientific models, or small taxidermy, Mary is ready with anecdotes that explain the origins of most items, embellished or not. Obscura is a fascinating place, even if you’re not a collector. Art directors, set designers, artists, and others looking for one-of-a-kind items will have an absolute field day. If you’re in the East Village, stop in and add something truly novel to your own collection.Show lessRead more
