Since opening in 2007, Jeff Madalena and Louis Terline’s OAK NYC has been dominating the downtown set with their modern mix of conceptual fashion and ease of wear. Black may be what the boutique is known for, but the real appeal is in garments that push a 21st century take on fashion. Pieces by Acne, Alexander Wang, and Preen are taken straight from the streets so it’s easy to imagine the styling possibilities behind textured knits and oversized cardigans. Oak’s shoe offerings don’t mess around with dainty trimmings either. They mean serious business with sturdy wedges, stacked heels, and leather laces aplenty. Menswear offers dark yet fashion-forward looks along with an array of hoodies, tees, and unlined jackets that are the mark of casual cool. A powerful looking denim jacket with funnel collar and leather sleeves was a standout. You can imagine the woman that’s wearing it, strolling down Bond Street through the biting cold. And looking phenomenal.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
