Norman & Jules

Courtney Ebner and Avi Kravitz list talking to customers as one of their “most favorite things,” and for good reason: the people who come through the door of Norman & Jules might be bringing their children to storytime, or perhaps are on a quest for a hand-crafted artisan toy to add to the playroom, and who isn’t fun to talk to when the focus is on imagination? Since opening its doors in 2012, the Park Slope toy shop has become a neighborhood fixture, hosting playtime in the beautiful back yard and allowing space for what Ebner describes as a “truly magical” experience to grow. Norman & Jules offers a range of toys from all corners of the globe and curates classic, everlasting pieces to encourage exploration. The selection includes baby and decor, dress up and imaginative play, building, books and real musical instruments, most of which are hand-made and fair trade. The toys, get-togethers and friendly exchanges are all part of an overarching focus on open-ended, creative play for children that is welcoming and encouraging to all.  Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
