Modernlink owner and designer William Lee followed his passion for design and named his company after being inspired by an exhibition on the influence of China’s Ming Dynasty on Danish Modernism. Years later, Lee, a New York transplant from Hong Kong, founded Modernlink to showcase expertly selected Modernist furniture that is almost exclusively Danish and Dutch (though the store also carries delicious Australian sheepskin throws, one of Lee’s guilty pleasures). Modernlink’s highly functional and stylish pieces are largely teak and rosewood and are often warmed by buttery leather or fine fabric. Lee, an inexhaustible source of knowledge about the history of furniture styles, also designs his own minimalist pieces in eco-friendly bamboo for Onelink, an eclectic design company of which he is part. Besides stocking furnishings from Onelink, Modernlink constantly updates its inventory, as Lee heads to Europe more than five times a year in search of elegant designs. Lee’s infectious excitement drives Modernlink, a place he refers to as “part architectural studio, interior design center, and furniture and industrial design lab.”Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
