Michele Varian

On a cobblestone street in SoHo, in an old smokehouse still adorned with original wrought iron hooks and chains, there is a place that feels more like a home away from home than a store. Shortly after graduating from Parsons with a degree in Fashion Design, Michele Varian established her independent company in the late 1990s, emboldened only by attention from high-end buyers and tremendous courage. The company started small, producing exclusively pillows and cushions, but has since become a champion of smart home décor. A decade later, Michele Varian is distributing an eloquently curated breadth of home furnishings, knick-knacks, and locally designed jewelry. Never far from any aspect of her business, Varian’s designs are often manufactured in house, and never beyond the East Coast. If there was ever a notion that glassware and throw pillows were a feminine thing, you wouldn’t know it by the SoHo boutiques clientele. Perhaps thanks to bold pieces like the popular chalkboard-globe and a variety of faux animal-head wall hangings, the patrons are a roughly equal mix of men and women. As the store distributes affordable contemporary art, Michele Varian Collective was formed to support the emerging, lesser-known creative community and provide selected Artists with representation.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
