McNally Jackson Books

Once upon a time, Sarah McNally found a giant hole in Manhattan: there were no event-driven community bookstores anymore. “There were no bookstores with even public seating—only the library still had chairs,” she said. So in 2004, armed with a sense of purpose and a love of books, she opened McNally Jackson on Prince Street on the border between SoHo and NoLita. Events at the Prince Street store cater to the diverse needs of the community. Author readings, lectures and panel discussions are offered five times a week in English and Spanish. The store itself is huge and lively, carrying texts of every genre, including a large, playful children’s section. Wooden chairs populate the ample nooks and cozy corners where readers can choose from the many provocative titles on display. Peckish bookworms can grab a bite at the in-house deli while e-book readers and authors can have their pages printed at the in-house bindery.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
