Matt Bernson

The Matt Bernson shop on Harrison Street is the first freestanding store from the lauded shoe designer, who had been doing wholesale for six years before opening the store in April 2012. Once inside, fans of the brand will soon notice they can shop the current collection and get a preview of what’s to come: a glass window at the back of the store separates the store from next season’s samples, displayed in the showroom one floor down. Bernson got his start designing sandals and has expanded to offer many other styles including ballet flats, heels and boots. He is careful to use vegetable tanned leather for an authentic finish, and other natural and precious materials. Bernson says he designs with a “Tribeca aesthetic” and aims to please the women of the neighborhood, offering them less hectic styles with signature sophistication and understatement. Aside from shoes, the store offers Bernson’s jewelry line of chain link or woven leather bracelets and plated metal gun necklaces alongside baubles by Dannijo. Vintage sunglasses by Christian Dior and YSL sit in a glass case near a display of oils by Jiva Apoha. Hard to believe it all started when Bernson, then a construction worker, gave his now-wife a pair of beautifully crafted sandals he found on trip to India. The joy on her face was all the inspiration he needed to start designing shoes himself. Head down to Tribeca for a new pair of shoes and a little joy of your own.Show lessRead more
