Manhattan Fruit Exchange
Manhattan Fruit Exchange

The slogan at the Manhattan Fruit Exchange is: “If it grows, we sell it.” While we didn't see any Asian Slipper Orchids during our visit, we did find one of New York's largest selections of fresh fruit and vegetables–from shiitake mushrooms and cactus leaves to McIntosh apples and Idaho potatoes. Founded in 1981 and operating out of its current location since 1994, the Manhattan Fruit Exchange has the distinction of being the first occupant of what is now Chelsea Market. The company began as a wholesale distributor of fruits and vegetables, and is still responsible for stocking the kitchens of innumerable NYC hotels and restaurants. This large wholesale base ensures a high turnover, so customers at the Chelsea Market locale are always getting very fresh produce at very good prices. Regardless of whether you just want a few twigs of rosemary or enough butternut squash to feed, god help you, your entire extended family, the Manhattan Fruit Exchange is a safe bet. In addition to being something of a vegetarian version of Noah's ark, this store also has an array of fresh cheeses and, yes, even some cured meats.Show lessRead moreFritz
