Lucy's Whey

    Remember when all the best cheeses seemed to come only from Europe? When the words "American" and "Cheese" used in conjunction would bring to mind orange, cellophane-wrapped squares? Luckily, Lucy’s Whey, with its focus on American artisanal cheese, is a reminder that Americans have every right to feel patriotic about their dairy products. After first opening in East Hampton in 2008, Lucy’s Whey added another location in 2009, setting up shop in the culinary heaven that is Chelsea Market. With the exception of its Parmigiano Reggiano, which is imported from Italy, all of the cheese sold here is American-made. And it’s not all from Wisconsin, either. The Capriole goat cheeses for instance are produced in southern Indiana, while the Moses Sleeper, a brie-like cheese made from cow’s milk, comes from Vermont. A big part of the philosophy at Lucy’s Whey is that consumers should educate themselves about their food, so there are frequent cheese appreciation tastings, many with refreshingly unusual themes.
