Leo Design

The awning outside of Leo Design bears the slogan, “Handsome Gifts.” Indeed, this West Village shop has some rather attractive merchandise. Opened by menswear designer Kimo Jung in 1995, Leo Design is an ever so carefully curated store that somehow manages to be claustrophobic in a good way. There's definitely a lot of stuff in the relatively modest store space, but it's the kind of stuff you could spend a whole afternoon (or lifetime) looking at. We're talking Art Deco cufflinks, ornate pottery and sculpture from the 1800s, vintage brass candlesticks, pewter paperweights, letter openers and ancient bookends with animal motifs. In short, Leo Design features aura-laden antiques that are still highly functional. The “gifts” reference on the store's exterior is more than apt. This is certainly a place where you can find an unusual present for someone who appreciates objects with genuine flair. You'd be forgiven if that someone happened to be yourself.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
