Le Du's Wines

In 2005, Jean Luc Le Dû opened Le Dû's Wines in the West Village. The first sommelier to start a wine store in NYC, Jean Luc has almost 20 years of experience in the industry. Among other achievements, his impressive career includes a stint as head sommelier at Daniel NYC, which garnered the restaurant a James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine Service. Transferring his talents to the wine retail business appears to have come naturally to Jean Luc: Le Dû's Wines has concrete floors and is temp-controlled 365 days a year, thereby replicating the conditions of a wine cellar. Bottles are displayed horizontally and according to grape variety, rather than region, which makes it easier for customers to discover new labels of their favorite wines. The selection is big on European makers (70-80%), with an emphasis on French wines. Jean Luc's preference for wines from smaller vineyards with less extensive production processes means that a large portion (over half) of his inventory is organic without “trying to be.” If you can, we recommend attending Le Dû's weekly wine tasting event. Usually on a Saturday, it is one of the most popular in the city, and is a hit with both life-long oenophiles and first-time wine drinkers.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
