The furniture and fixtures at Karkula will enhance any atmosphere, as they are modern, sleek, and luxurious without pretension. The store first opened on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, spent a decade grunging it out in the Meatpacking District and in Tribeca before settling in Williamsburg in 2013. Sleek wooden designs from Oluce, Fritz Hansen, and Paola Lenti rest alongside large chainsaw-cut wooden bowls from local Brooklyn artists. Most furniture in the store is decidedly twenty-first century: forward-looking and modern without being rigid or cold. Blond wooden bed frames, fluid-like steel lamps, and curved cobalt couches offer dreamlike appeal without compromising high functionality. Along with countless local and international designers, owner John Erik Karkula, a furniture designer himself, crafts pieces with traditional tools and methods aimed at making the pieces feel very organic. Karkula also features stunning wall and standing artwork, most of which is handcrafted wood—the Antoni Gaudi oak and glass Calvet Mirror is truly something to behold.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
