Idlewild Books

Idlewild specializes in travel guides and foreign-language books. Since opening in 2008, David Del Vecchio, a former United Nations press officer, has been stocking his charming Flatiron district bookstore with literature centered on departure. Fans of foreign children’s books will find a thorough selection of Asterix, The Adventures of Tintin, and Madeline, which definitely makes Idlewild a must- stop for all Francophile New Yorkers. They also carry novels for both adults and kids in Spanish and Italian. Idlewild features a multitude of portals to far off destinations. But rather than exclusively stocking books on sightseeing, Del Vecchio also stocks foreign narratives by Haruki Murakami or Franz Kafka. Also worthwhile are Idlewild’s language classes, where you can comfortably learn French, Italian or Spanish, taught by native speakers ranging from beginner to advanced, incorporating popular comics and conversational classes. You can easily spend hours perusing carefully selected classics about regions like West Africa and Finland. We dare you to step in without being inspired to take a trip.Show lessRead more
