Holler & Squall

“We needed a place for all the stuff we had in our apartment,” said Zak Wing, when asked why he and his wife Gillette opened Holler & Squall in 2009. He was only half kidding. “We’ve both always been collectors,” Gillette continued, “and eventually we wanted to share objects that we appreciated with others.” The couple’s great taste was more than evident as our eyes spied one amazing artifact after another. Whether it was a gorgeous piece of coral, a vintage lamp, or one of the two stuffed water buffalo heads, we were enthralled and fascinated. Holler & Squall’s unofficial slogan is “Things Unlimited,” and although most of the items feel like they come from another age, Zak doesn’t think of the shop as an antiques store. Instead, the couple’s eclectic tastes emphasize their love of distressed leather, worn wood, heavy metal, and industrial lighting. Many items are utilitarian in nature, explaining the workshop in the basement, but shoppers looking for something purely ornamental will also find ample treasures. Show lessRead more
