Greenlight Bookstore

In 2009, the Fort Greene Association took a poll of the neighborhood asking what types of retail options residents thought were most needed in their community. The response was an overwhelming consensus: a bookstore. Serendipitously, Rebecca Fitting and Jessica Stockton Bagnulo had just formed a business partnership to open an independent bookstore and been awarded the funds to do it. The FGA contacted the two women, and Greenlight Bookstore was born. The owners opened the store with a combined 26 years of experience in the book business and a passion for creating community. They have made Greenlight an open space for exchange and free community events including book readings featuring local authors. They run two book clubs, one for adults and one for children, and outside book clubs are able to register through the store and receive a discount on the books they select. In addition to the activities inside the store, Greenlight Bookstore reaches out into the community, holding book fairs at local schools and partnering with Brooklyn Academy of Music to collaborate on events. Through these events and its selection of various literary genres Greenlight hopes to encourage literacy in the Fort Greene community and the greater New York City area.Show lessRead more
