Good Records NYC

The owner of Good Records, Jonathan Sklute, started out collecting records on his own as a hobby and when he decided to give up his career in finance, the store seemed like a natural next step. This being New York, there is a great variety of disco and African-influenced music, but the store isn't specialized or focused on a single genre – there's truly something for everyone. The space is long and narrow, a bit like a railroad car, but with rustic wood floors, tin tile ceilings and jazzy tunes playing over the sound system. There's a cozy charm to the place that makes it feel more like a cafe hangout than a typical store. A variety of records are displayed on the walls, and wooden bins of records line the space, perfect to flip through on your own. Don't be afraid to ask for something specific your'e looking for, as the service is both friendly and knowledgeable. Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
