Foxy & Winston

This lovely little shop manages to put a personal, hand-made touch on the too often impersonal world of greeting cards. Far from the slick, mass-produced reproductions in the drug store, Foxy and Winston owner Jane Buck illustrates and silk-screens each of her playful designs, melding whimsy and personality into the elephants, deer or little birds that play across the card stock. “I try to focus on the texture,” Buck said from her back-house workshop. “I’m working on an anteater at the moment where there is a pattern of tiny little ants running all over him.” She opened on Van Brunt Street in 2005 after years of working out of her apartment. Aside from stationery, she also carries organic fair trade tea towels printed with soy inks, organic baby tee’s, bibs, hats, sleepers and book totes, limited edition wall art, aprons, and natural muslin drawstring pouches in various sizes.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
