Erie Basin

Russell Whitmore opened Erie Basin in 2006 to right what he considered a wrong: Antiques in New York City were either outrageously overpriced, or just junk. “There‘s a lot of nice stuff that doesn’t need to be priced as high end,” he told us in his Van Brunt Street shop in Red Hook. “What we focus on is selling old things, but old things that relate to modern tastes. We have a fairly small inventory but we’re constantly changing things based on what people are buying. We try to stay on trend as much as possible.” Rather than focusing on collector’s items, Erie Basin features 18th to 20th century pieces with an emphasis on fine design. Jewelry here comes from around the globe, featuring a broad range of metals and stones, among other materials. Erie Basin also carries antique furniture and other objects of interest.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
