Elizabeth Street Gallery

Tucked away in Nolita, the garden that houses Elizabeth Street Gallery’s sculptural artifacts offers a tranquil respite from the pandemonium of surrounding shopping streets. Don’t be fooled by the bucolic setting, though. Set throughout the courtyard and tucked away in the showroom you’ll find a collision of pieces that range from ancient Greek and Roman stone vessels, to 16th- to 19th-century statuary and architectural ornaments, to 20th-century folk art. A life-size bronze horse resides comfortably next to a cherubic stone fountain, while a table lamp casts light upon a 19th-century cast iron gargoyle that could pass as its miniature cousin. While the gargoyles are original, the lamp is actually one of owner Allan Reiver’s many spot-on reproductions. Reiver, formerly of Urban Archeology, is a true connoisseur of design, and his Elizabeth Street Gallery is a must-see for native New Yorkers and visitors alike.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
