De Vera

Carved ivory saints from the Philippines and gently smiling roman goddesses greet visitors to Soho's DeVera, which houses a sprawling and complex array of treasures vast and intriguing enough to eat up hours if you wish. From a stone Cambodian Apsara relief to jeweled cigarette cases, DeVera's two floor showroom is almost mystical. The eager-to-please staff offers expert knowledge of the thousands of carefully cataloged items. The jewelry designed by owner Federico DeVera, constitutes a whole separate treasure chest of necklaces and earrings that incorporate antiques such as ancient Greek and Roman coins, or South Asian statuettes into contemporary pieces. He opened his first store in San Francisco in 1991 and expanded to NYC in 2003. Because DeVera travels the world far and wide to curate a mythical and very personal theme through the store's items, visitors too feel like explorers as they gaze down on woven-hair medallions, fierce masks, exotic pottery, and other-worldly ensembles of clay statue hands in glass boxes.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
