Chelsea Wine Vault

When Chelsea Market opened in 1996 its first vendor, perhaps fittingly, was the Chelsea Wine Vault. Having built a reputation on a vast selection and deeply knowledgeable staff, CWV is now a local partner of the Food Network (also located in Chelsea Market) and wine buyer/general manager David Hunter also serves as an unofficial sommelier for them. Hunter claims he only carries wines he loves–fortunately his love casts a wide net because his discerning palate has selected the nearly 2000 labels to be found here. Among these are a number of small, artisanal producers whose wines are crafted in very limited quantities and snapped up by the canniest buyers. Collectibles and rarities, vintages of which there are only a select few bottles in existence, comprise another specialty and are a source of pride for Hunter. Lest one get a false impression of haughtiness, CWV also features “100 under $10” value specials and their top-10 wines are always displayed at the front of the store. Every wine-producing region is represented—including an unparalleled selection of NY State wines—as well as a full line of liquors & spirits, meaning they have all bases covered. CWV’s staff remains intimately familiar with the inventory as they also taste everything that ends up on the shelves. To aid their customers, they also do regular events & classes centered on demystifying wine (generally 3 times a week) and host some full-store events, too. Stop by during one of their regular tastings and then sign up for their “wine of the month” style club which delivers both locally & nationally.Show lessRead more
