Books of Wonder

Books of Wonder, the bookstore owned by Peter Glassman, has become the city’s oldest and largest independent children’s bookshop. Glassman, who has been working around books one way or another since he was 15, describes himself as having an “Old World idea of courtesy,” going above and beyond to make sure his customers are happy. The lovely and colorful store, which is as welcoming to children as to their parents, arranges books alphabetically, but also in series order. It also shelves picture books by artist rather than author. The 3,000-sq. ft. space is stocked entirely with children’s books, unless you consider the heavenly cupcakes in the attached Cupcake Café. Besides being a warm environment to lazily explore with your child, Books of Wonder also hosts a variety of author signings and readings with big-name writers, such as Suzanne Collins, Madeline Engel, and Lloyd Alexander. Some events draw hundreds of people and include kid-friendly entertainment like jugglers, make-up artists, and magicians. Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
