In 1981, Henry Zook and Mary Gannett opened BookCourt in Carroll Gardens. In doing so, the couple fulfilled their common dream while giving the neighborhood the literary oasis it was lacking. “In the beginning,” Zack Zook told us of his parents, “they were both in the store every day, from open 'til close.” That devotion paid off; in 1990, a basement section was added, and in 1996, BookCourt expanded into a neighboring building. Although it may have increased in size, BookCourt retains its cozy, relaxed atmosphere. The staff is knowledgeable without being pretentious, so if you’d like advice about which Nabokov or Dickens to read, chances are there will be someone to help. Speaking of famous authors, Don DeLillo recently gave a reading at BookCourt and Jonathan Ames (a loyal customer) frequently stops by. Although a wide variety of books are stocked, there is a special emphasis on fiction. Because BookCourt is such a local favorite, however, the selection is largely focused on the reading predilections of the neighborhood. Good thing Brooklyners are so well read!Show lessRead more
