Book Thug Nation

At Book Thug Nation, a small used bookstore in Williamsburg, all store employees contribute to the offerings, and thanks to their diverse tastes, there is truly something for everyone inside. The shop opened in 2010 after the building’s owner decided that she would like to have a bookstore in the ground floor space and offered it to three sellers she’d seen peddling paperbacks on Bedford Avenue. While tiny, the space houses sections on world languages, world history, art and poetry, and it’s clear that each volume was chosen with thought and care - the buyers source books from all over as well as holding buying sessions from noon to one every afternoon. The shop is separated into sections by genre, and within each the books are organized alphabetically by author. On the shelves of the Young Adult section sit gently loved children’s favorites by Roald Dahl and Madeleine L’Engle; in another section, true lit-lovers will find the works of their friends Saul Bellow, Tom Robbins, Dylan Thomas, Robert Frost and beyond - think Graham Greene to the Bronte sisters, Sartre, and Brooklyn’s own Truman Capote.  As the neighborhood has changed and become trendier, so has the clientele, but the shop retains its mission of offering already-loved books at fair prices in a friendly space without any fanfare; the aim, after all, is to put your nose in a book and shut out the rest of the world.Show lessRead more
