Blu Dot

John Christakos, Charles Lazor, and Maurice Blanks left college with a passion for architecture and design, but without the funds to furnish their homes in kind. To solve the dilemma, they founded Blu Dot, a design collective that specializes in home furnishings. In 2008 the partners opened a showroom in Soho, which is itself a delight to behold with soaring ceilings and a dramatic stainless steel staircase. Blu Dot makes super affordable wares with clean lines inspired by Danish modernism and the basic yet sophisticated feel of the 1950s. Still, it’s a bit reductive to describe the line so succinctly, as the designers’ sense of humor propels it to a different stratosphere. There’s the Buttercup Chair in sleek bent plywood made more welcoming when combined with a stainless steel rocking base, and the Splash Coat Rack that looks like its been dipped in paint. Pieces like those and others are artsy, yet totally utilitarian. Furthermore, the staff at Blu Dot is passionate about great design without being pushy. Its motto is “good design is good,” yet we say that at Blu Dot, design is even better. Show lessRead more
