Black Gold

Great coffee shops reflect their owners, and Black Gold’s intricate eccentricities fit owners Sommer Foster-Santoro and Jeff Ogiba perfectly. Antique taxidermy badgers and birds overlook worn wooden tea crates stuffed with gloriously obscure 7-inch records, rare occult Odd-Fellow charms, broken clocks, and yummy treats from local bakers. The coffee—by Rook Coffee Roasters—is deep, dark, and fantastic, and the available record collection is broad, diverse, and lively: soul, R&B, international, rock, industrial, punk, reggae, pop, and all vinyl. “There are no CDs here,” said Ogiba resolutely, an obvious audiophile. The biological and religious artwork, silk curtains, and natural wood grains make a perfect environment for record browsing and coffee sipping. Santoro and Ogiba opened the shop in 2010 after they became bored with their previous jobs in hospitality and design. “We were just fed up,” Santoro said. “This is personal. It’s just ours. This looks like my living room.”Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
