Under Jen Mankins' refined curatorial skills, Bird has proved itself to be one of Brooklyn's most fashionable spots. This isn't surprising at all considering Mankins' experiences: she started as an assistant buyer for Barney's New York, and later became head buyer for Steven Alan. Embarking on this independent venture is a first for Mankins, and she drew inspiration from her travels from Denmark to New Delhi. Phillip Lim, A.P.C., Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Thakoon and Steven Alan line the walls. As for shoes, look for oh-so-soft Repetto flats, classically feminine Audrey Hepburn pumps, and plenty of others that are best described as staples-with-a-twist. But Bird is more than just a clothing and footwear shop; its selection of jewelry is dainty, earthy, and elegant. The Williamsburg shop is New York City’s first ever LEED-certified retail store, meaning that it meets high standards for its low impact on the environment. Designed by Norwegian architect Ole Sondresen, Bird is beautiful in and of itself, but it also features art exhibits and other regular events to fully complete your sensory experience. As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
