Since the summer of 2012, Baggu has become a full-time resident of Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg after a successful run as what was meant to just be a pop-up shop. Success and evolution is not new for this company, however, even though this bright and open store in the heart of the hippest part of Brooklyn is currently their only permanent location. The original concept was a nylon shopper that could be folded into a small square, but the offerings have grown to include bags in many other shapes and sizes, including backpacks, weekend bags, laptop and tablet cases in addition to the original tote, which is still their most popular style. And although Baggu offers their designs in other materials including leather and canvas, the operation hasn’t lost sight of its original environmental concerns. All of the leather bags, pouches, purses and more are made from meat industry byproducts. Founders Emily Sugihara and Ellen Vander laan plan to continue the brand’s ever-evolving inventory, including custom projects and collaborations with other companies, like next door neighbor Pilgrim Surf & Sport, which sells an exclusive surf bag design. As for the space itself, the colorful mix of totes in all shapes and materials hanging from the walls and laid out over tables and shelves makes for a tantalizing spread, and we wouldn’t be surprised if some customers walk out of the store with one of each.Show lessRead more
