718 Cyclery

Joe Nocella was stuck in an unending cycle of desks and computer screens working as an architect in fast-paced New York City. One day his bike was stolen, and when he decided to build a replacement himself, 718 Cyclery was created along with it. The spacious bike shop, located in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, caters to everyone from bike enthusiasts to novices. Nocella stocks the store with standard riding gear, but the true raison d’être of 718 is the improvement of existing bikes and the construction of new ones. The workshop space is deliberately open wide to the rest of the shop for “collaborative builds” - customers are invited and encouraged to get their hands dirty and work on their bikes alongside of the staff. Nocella brings his knowledge of architecture and appreciation of design to each bike, and often works with people to create their own custom ride. In addition to the collaborative custom jobs, the shop offers free classes and endeavors to build community through bikes. There is no arrogance, no attitude and no secrets, just a shared passion for cycling and human connection in an increasingly digital age.Show lessRead more

    ABOUT US

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
