192 Books

Loyal Chelsea neighbors, contemporary art enthusiasts, and visitors to the High Line all flock to this general-interest bookstore which has a penchant for knowing its clientel's tastes. The store’s inventory consists mainly of literary fiction, art books, children’s books, and literature-in-translation, an underrepresented genre in the U.S. market. Owners Paula Cooper and Jack Macrae leave the job of book buying in the able hands of Patrick Knisley, who also manages the store. With a Ph.D. in English literature from Harvard, he is more than qualified for the position. 192 Books has limited space and no hidden storage rooms, so even with only one or two copies of each title in stock a careful selection is paramount. This results in shelves filled with so many critically acclaimed titles that you’ll want to browse for hours. Come by for one of the shop’s bi-weekly readings, arts events, or just flip through available signed copies if you’d rather purchase a more collectible tome.Show lessRead more
