Most of us can probably remember our favorite toy store growing up (hopefully it wasn’t Toys R Us), which is part of the thrill of visiting Toybox in Victoria Park Village. Staunchly independent since 2009, the small Hackney children’s store is a true neighborhood gem. Piled high with all sorts of goods both classic and resolutely contemporary (think marbles juxtaposed with superhero Legos), the shop offers nostalgic memories for you and, more importantly, a mixed array of toys for the child or children you’re buying for. From stuffed animals to craft materials, board games to action figures, there is a little bit of everything. Since this is no cavernous mega store, the toys that make the grade here are carefully selected, primarily from toy-makers and game companies in the UK, USA and Germany. On our visit we were reassured to learn that traditional toys are still some of the most popular, with fishing sets, carpenter’s belts and puppets still capturing the imagination of the 21st century child.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
