Slow is better than fast, or at least it is according to tokyobike who preach a style of cycling centered on city cruising rather than A to B commutes. Having grown out of the slow paced Tokyo suburb of Yanaka, tokyobike is the antithesis of the fixed gear frenzy that has gripped most cosmopolitan cities. Arriving in London in 2012 with a spacious Shoreditch store, the brand brought four models and a very specific cycling concept with it. A choice of single speed, 7-speed, 8-speed and 9-speed models takes care of the mechanics, which they hope will encourage you to explore your city in the best way possible – on two wheels. Aesthetically the bikes have an updated heritage appeal – polka dots and stickers cover frames and colors are usually bright and bold. Although the tokyobike concept largely avoids customization the store also has a collection of authentic Japanese grips, Brooks saddles, racks and pannier bags. So if you’re more cruiser than courier, tokyobike will appeal.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
