Founded in Cologne in 1980, Taschen have since become one of the world’s most successful art publishers. Needless to say its selection is extensive, ranging from mainstream art and photography to cinema, architecture, vintage advertising and erotica. The London branch was designed by Philippe Starck and its slightly offbeat décor provides an inviting space to browse the many colorful tomes on display. The ground floor is where the main collection is held, with the store’s informative staff (many of them budding photographers and artists themselves) on hand to give customers advice. Downstairs is the gallery, where large, spellbinding photographs from the likes of Leni Riefenstahl and Helmut Newton hang from the walls. Here is also where Taschen’s limited Art Editions are kept; these are extra-large folios in specially designed cases, which each come with an original photographic print. Unsurprisingly they are highly popular with collectors and bibliophiles, and are normally snapped up in advance before they even reach the store. But if it’s just a glossy coffee table book you’re after, then you definitely won’t leave empty-handed.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
