It’s a little known fact that the handsome chap disrobing in a laundrette in the iconic 1985 Levi’s 501 ad, was wearing boxer shorts by Sunspel. Indeed, the British menswear brand (who has since branched out into womenswear) was the first to introduce boxer shorts to the UK in 1947, after noticing their popularity in America. These, along with other classic wardrobe staples such as crisp white T-Shirts, are the reason why Sunspel retains a loyal clientele since Thomas A. Hill founded the company in 1860. The Shoreditch store, located on the hipster haunt of Redchurch Street, boasts a selection of classic knitwear and wardrobe basics for men and women. They also offer accessories from other well-known British brands such as Doc Martin boots and Cutler and Gross spectacles. With warm furnishings of exposed brick and wood paneling, the atmosphere is more akin to a gentlemen’s club than a clothes store, with elements of the brand’s heritage apparent throughout. Vintage tomes from yesteryear are dotted around the store as well as large-scale photographs of the company factory from years ago (all garments are still produced in Nottingham). Show lessRead more
