The next time you're making your way down Camden Passage, whether for antiquing purposes or just to check out the pretty people, we recommend you pop by Smug. This charming “lifestyle” store was opened in 2009 by native Islingtonian Lizzie Evans. An interior and graphic designer by trade, Lizzie personally refurbished and redesigned a vacant townhouse to give her shop a relaxed, homey feel. Smug's impressive collection of vintage '50s furniture, most of which is for sale, contributes to the overall atmosphere of unpretentious retro-chic. Although ostensibly a home furnishing boutique, such an appellation is too narrow to convey all that Smug has, ahem, in store. This is perhaps the only place in London where you'll find toy elephants manufactured from quilts by Pakistani snake charmers alongside vintage Casio watches. But Smug's inventory also includes such refreshingly low-key items like vegetable-themed coffee mugs and scented candles. Lizzie is currently working on her own design ideas, but until her line comes out she is happy to promote the work of up-and-coming designers like Donna Wilson, Matt Pugh and Thornback & Peel.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
