Postcard Teas

While founder Tim D’Offay proudly describes Postcard Teas as “London’s only purely loose leaf tea shop,” anyone expecting the traditional English tea rooms popular with tourists will be sorely disappointed – for here, tea is taken very seriously. Inspired by his travels as a global tea importer, D’Offay embarked on this new retail venture in 2005. Each tea caddy lining the walls has a postcard of a delicate illustration, many taken from the country where that particular tea originates (India and Southeast Asia are well-represented). As one would expect, there is a staggering variety of black, green and oolong teas, notably Master Yoshida’s Original Gyokuro, made by a 16th generation Japanese tea master and the only tea in history to be designated intangible cultural heritage. The company works with producers with less than fifteen acres of land, as the tea is of better quality - not to mention better working conditions too. (Operations this small usually see the owner and his family make up the bulk of the workforce). There are also many tea-related accessories available, from craftsman Japanese tea pots, tea cozies and exclusive Wedgewood tea sets, to fans used for fanning charcoal and, as D’Offay puts it, “Decoration and niceness.”Show lessRead more
