Peter Harrington

Are you proud of your bookshelves or could they do with a little pimping out? Something to the tune of a Harry Potter first edition or a super-rare copy of Helmut Newton’s first monograph could do just the trick. This is where Peter Harrington, one of London’s finest rare and antiquarian booksellers, comes in. With locations in Mayfair and Kensington, the two classically-styled stores deal in a range of literature and artists’ books. “Our aim is to make rare books as accessible as possible,” says Mayfair store manager and buyer Ben Houston. Prices vary dramatically but whether you are a dedicated collector or just a passionate bibliophile, you’ll be able to find something to walk away with. Examples of what one may come across include an early copy of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a first edition of Robert Frank’s The Americans and a copy of John Thomson’s China - an example of the very earliest street photography that dates back to the late 19th century. Filled with objects of real beauty, both stores are bliss for the bookish – big spender or not.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
