Persephone Books

Having previously authored, A Very Great Profession: The Woman’s Novel, 1914-1939, Nicola Beauman was well versed in the history of strong female writing. In 1999, she established Persephone Books with the purpose of printing neglected fiction and non-fiction by women, about women and for women. The shop on Lamb’s Conduit Street, has since gone from strength to strength. They publish a number of out of print books each year, winning fans for both content and design. The Persephone Books house style – dove grey jacket with cream details – is further ehanced with end papers made out of fabric patterns that correspond to the era of the book. Short stories, novels, letters and diaries work both as historical timepieces and enjoyable stand-alone works. One particular success was the best selling Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, adapted into a film starring Amy Adams. The aesthetics of the titles alone make Persephone Books a great place to visit but the subject matter will have you delving deeper.Show lessRead more
