Magma was founded in 2000, after owners Marc Valli and Montse Ortuno saw a gap in the independent retail scene. They promptly filled it with their clever, well-directed visual arts bookshop, the first location opening that the Seven-Dials intersection in Covent Garden. Now in two more locations across the city, Magma attracts Barbican architects, Clerkenwell ad-execs and Covent Garden creatives with its blend of contemporary, design-themed wares that aim to inspire. Whether it’s the Rob Ryan coffee mugs, the new Wallpaper Magazine or a Moomins flick-book, Magma continues to present graphic design to the masses. The importance of an original experience for the customer was a vital consideration for Marc Valli from the beginning, which resulted in the stores’ unique layouts. All books, magazines, and graphic novels are faced out and stacked to the ceiling, which results in quite a sight. There are no sorry-looking spines here and every visit remains a visual treat. London may be home to many design stores but none of them offer the breadth of cherry-picked books and products that Magma does. Subjects like Photography, Fashion, Typography, Web-Design, Contemporary Art, Advertising and Illustration all sit proud on the hallowed high-rise shelves.Show lessRead more
