L. Cornelissen & Son

They say that behind every great painter is a great colorman. Well, actually, they don’t say that but they should, and in London when it comes to traditional colormen, L. Cornelissen & Son is the best in the business. Trading since 1855, the shop near the British Museum has been providing artists of all calibers with their paints and materials for over 100 years. Stepping through the shop doors is akin to stepping into a time warp that leaves you somewhere between an ancient artist’s apothecary and a set from Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. Modern supplies of paints, pastels, brushes, canvas and easels are stored like artifacts in curiosity cabinets, but there is much more waiting to be discovered. With the help of the knowledgeable staff, you can dig deep into mysterious drawers where you’ll find hidden bottles of liquid pigment of every imaginable shade and color, hard to find gums, resins and other specialty items. Artist or not, L. Cornelissen & Son is a store to visit. Show lessRead more
