Koenig Books

As Europe’s largest independent bookseller, it is only natural that Koenig Books should have a branch on the famous literary thoroughfare of Charing Cross Road. Opened in 2006, the bookstore is one of London’s greatest resources for art books with a special emphasis on photography. Split over two levels, the sleek shop is a photographer’s dream. On the ground floor, the beautiful books are done justice with careful presentation that allows them to shine. From contemporary editions by the likes of Ryan McGinley and Wolfgang Tillmans to classic monographs, Koenig has a little of everything. And, thanks to its buying power in the USA, Germany and Japan, you’ll often find works unavailable elsewhere in the UK. But perhaps most exciting of all is the basement full of year-round special offers. It’s a true treasure trove of art where you’ll find anything from exhibition catalogues to artists’ books at discounted prices. Whether you’re just learning to discern your Bruce Davidson from your David Bailey or already a full-fledged photography fanatic, Koenig Books is the place to look. Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
