John Sandoe

The term “old school” is often bandied about, but John Sandoe is one shop that truly deserves the distinction. Housed in three mid-18th century buildings, its plentiful, full-to-bursting shelves aren’t piled high with best-sellers, but rather volumes that you won’t see anywhere else on specialized topics like Islamic Art and other design-related literature. (Their only criterion is “good books,” although art and design feature heavily into the inventory due to John Sandoe’s Chelsea location). Poetry enthusiasts will take delight in perusing the shop’s extensive collection, which is one of the largest in London. There is also a well-stocked children’s section, where adults will probably recognize much-loved classics from their childhoods. Having provided reading material to Chelsea’s well-heeled clientele since 1957, the store’s emphasis is on the personal touch and good old-fashioned customer service. Thirty percent of their clients actually live outside the UK, but still order books by mail and receive a list of new titles from the shop each quarter. John Sandoe also publishes a novella each year, which is written by either a staff member or a customer. Another service they offer is curating personal libraries for high-profile customers, and plans for implementing ebook sales are also on the horizon. But don’t think this means they’re turning their back on paper: It’s “for those who want to carry something light when travelling and will hopefully buy the hardback from us on their return!”Show lessRead more
