Japan Centre

A true slice of Tokyo in Central London, Japan Centre has everything from sushi to novelty sweets, books and magazines to kitchenware. The store was founded in 1976 by Tak Tokumine and was originally a book shop for London’s Japanese community. Since then, the store has attracted a wider clientele ranging from local office workers wanting a bite of sushi at lunch time, to anime fans looking for a rare DVD or comic. Tokumine came up with the idea of adding a sushi bar, as an antidote to the many other sushi bars which had begun to crop up all over London, which he believed were overpriced and of poor quality. All the sushi is freshly made on the premises, in addition to many other Japanese delicacies like rice burgers (where the meat is sandwiched between two ‘buns’ made out of rice) as well as noodles and tempura prepared by specially trained chefs. The store also has a fish counter selling delicacies like yellow tail and black cod, and an extensive sake fridge, with special sake taster sessions held during the day. But the majority of the store is taken up by dry foods, where you can take your pick of the many varieties of wasabi peas, soy sauce, sushi rice and novelty sweets on offer, as well as a number of other fantastic foods you may not have heard of.Show lessRead more
