Honest Jon's

Started by ‘Honest’ Jon Clare way back in 1974, this Portobello Road record store has long since edged beyond institution status. Jon himself may have departed some time ago but the store’s traditions persist in the hands of Alan Scholefield and Mark Ainley. Specializing in soul, jazz, reggae and world music, Honest Jon’s is the place to come for that rare Lee Perry 7” in a world that has done its best to drive vinyl underground. As well as the wax, there is a good range of CDs where you’ll soon discover the depths of Honest Jon’s music knowledge. Unique afro-Latin soul compilations find a place among psycho-beat recordings and dancehall rarities. From early West London sound-system culture to the annual Notting Hill Carnival on its doorstep, Honest Jon’s has always been a big part of the neighborhood’s music scene – the store even runs an eponymously named label. Having refined the knack of sourcing what the people want, you can be sure that a trip to Honest Jon’s will beat digging through thrift store record crates any day.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
