Very few establishments founded in the 1700s still remain a family business, yet Floris, the second oldest perfumer in the world, happens to be one of them. Founded by Juan Famenias Floris in 1730, the original store still stands proudly on Jermyn Street. Historical documents such as a royal warrant from King George IV and original scent bottles are still on display, together with a small museum at the back where customers can further explore its history. The store also still retains the Spanish mahogany showcases that were originally purchased in 1851. Floris has attracted many famous fans over the years, such as Winston Churchill, who liked to wear No. 127 - a scent originally created for Russia’s Grand Duke Orloff in 1890. Marilyn Monroe was said to purchase six bottles of their Rose Geranium scent when she visited the UK in the 1950s. And to help get into the character of James Bond, actor Daniel Craig allegedly doused himself with No.89, a personal favourite of Bond author Ian Fleming. Another original classic is Limes, originally created in 1892, whose fresh citrus notes were used to mask the stench of Victorian Londoners. As well as keeping their classic scents alive, Floris also creates new additions like 280, which marked their 280th anniversary in 2010, and offers a bespoke fragrance service.Show lessRead more
